Five On Friday

Please forgive me, but as the organiser of Five On Friday I occasionally take a liberty with my posts and I am doing that today.

I have had a horrid week.  My brother in love dog, Benson, died yesterday just short of his 12th birthday.

Benson was a wonderful dog.  I know that all pets are wonderful - they really are - but Benson was special.  He suffered from a lot of illnesses from birth and had many operations, took daily medication and had lots of difficulties to overcome.

Despite all that Benson never let anything get him down.  He had the nicest most placid kindest and loving personality of any person or animal that I have ever met.  I realise that I sound biased, and I am!, but his doggy sister, although a wonderful dog, doesn't have the things that Benson had so I don't think I am overstating this.

We will all miss Benson more than I can describe to you.  Benson just knew.  He knew everything.  I think because of his own difficulties he could somehow empathise in a doggy way with others difficulties.  I learned a lot about keeping going from Benson, and trust me, that is something that I need to do sometimes.

Benson wasn't my own dog, but he was as close as he could have been to being mine.

There have been other problems too this week with issues related to Man who is being less than pleasant about us trying to help him.  That is all quite upsetting.

Added to that I have been having horrid dreams and much broken sleep as well.

So sorry that I haven't been round visiting or blogging properly.  I have noticed that there has been a lot less traffic coming by here recently so I do apologise for not getting round if that is the reason you haven't stopped by here.  Or perhaps you are just busy with summery things and your own life.  Or it could be that I have just been a bit boring!

Anyway, I am sorry that I haven't been by.  Give me a few days, it is our bank holiday weekend this weekend - long weekend - so after that I hope to be a bit more refreshed and will be round visiting even if I am not up to much blogging for a little bit.

Benson, you won't read my blog, you didn't even know it existed, but I love you and will miss more than I can say.  I will be waiting to see you again one day.  Thank you for loving us all so much.

I hope you all have a good weekend.

Go and love on your pets!
Amy

  2. Hi Amy, I'm so sad to hear of the loss of your brother's dear dog Benson. He looks like he was a gentle, kind dog and I'm sure was one of a kind. It's very hard to loose a much loved pet. I hope that your family affairs will be fine. It's a three day weekend here too and the non-official start to all the summer festivities. I wish you a wonderful, fun filled weekend. Hugs, Pat

  4. Oh Amy, I'm so sorry to hear about Benson and about your other worries. I hope you will manage to have some relaxing moments this weekend.
Don't worry about less traffic. Many bloggers have noticed the same. Perhaps it's the summer, more gardening, holidays... I have also noticed there has been less referral spam in the last weeks - it may make the traffic look less.
    Big hugs! xx

  11. Always a shame to lose a pet, unlike our livestock our pets are part of the family so of course it always hurts to lose one.
We haven't been by the site for a while but don't beat yourself up, it's nothing you've done, we've just been so busy with other things we have barely been on our own blog lol

Hope you have a wonderful bank holiday weekend and that things start looking up for you,

  13. Oh how sad poor Benson. You've given him a lovely memorial on your blog and will now be able to look back on his photos in the future when you feel sad. I'm sure you have enough to do, what with your podcasts and crochet without having to visit all our blogs all the time, so don't worry we know you're still there. x

  15. I'm so sorry to hear that you're having such a bad time and I really hope that things start to improve soon. When we lost our lovely cat Barney a couple of years ago I was devastated and it took a long time for me to come to terms with it. I understand exactly what you mean that Benson just 'knew' things. Some pets are just very special. Take care.

  17. I'm sorry you've had such a distressing week Amy for various reasons. Losing a much loved pet or one that has been part of your life for some time is upsetting. It throws you completely. Re visiting blogs and leaving a comment we understand it's not always possible so no worries. Take care Amy.

  18. What a beautiful and kind looking dog! Your friend Benson will be sorely missed. You are having some rough times lately. You are doing your very best for Man, and he is no longer his 'real' self, so can't respond appropriately. He is probably quite frightened by the offers of help. Gosh, it is so difficult. Do enjoy your Bank holiday, and find something nice to do for yourself dear Amy. xx

  20. Amy, I'm so sorry about "your" lovely doggy, he sounds like one in a million. We are thinking about getting a dog one day (although not for a long time!) and I would like a dog with a personality like that. It's good that you had him in your life, even if it wasn't for long enough. Please don't feel you have to visit, there are only so many hours in the day, and you shouldn't be tied to a screen. I'm wishing you a good weekend after what sounds like a tricky week. CJ xx

  29. Amy, you made me cry. I have a dog in my life too that I am very attached to and he is Benson's age. So sorry for your loss. Also sorry you aren't feeling well. I see a lot of bloggers missing or sporadic in their postings lately. We have no idea what they are going through and miss them. This is a busy season too. Just do what you have to do. Hugs.

  31. So sorry to hear about such a beloved pet, always a sad time. Your week sounds a little like mine, I am struggling this week to keep up with all the medical appointments and visits for everyone. Constant earache does not help!

  32. Oh Amy. I'm very, very sorry. We lost one of those special dogs about six years ago. You catch yourself hearing barks that don't happen and glimpses that aren't there, except maybe they are there in a way.

We'll be here when you're ready to write again. NO rush. Take care of yourself.

  33. How heart breaking! Losing our pets, even if he wasn't officially yours, is just gut wrenching. The tears I've cried over our animals would fill a tub. Take the time you need to feel better.

  34. Sorry for the troubles of this week and for the loss of your dear doggy friend Benson. When you grow attached like that it is quite a loss. Hope you find comfort. I think long weekends throw people off and Canada bloggers had a long weekend and now U.S. bloggers have a long weekend starting today. I always notice traffic falling off this time of year. I'm having a hard time keeping track of days. Hope things even out for you.

  42. It is so hard to lose a dog - they take a little bit of your heart with them. I prescribe a lovely soak in a scented bath with a glass of wine and a good book to read, then off to bed. If I have a disturbed night, I get up, go to the loo, go and have a drink (water/juice)then go back to bed and settle down again - much better than tossing and turning. Check out this website http://www.hypnosisaudio.com/ for excellent help in relaxation (I have a super cd to help cope with pain).
    Enjoy the weekend, Anne x

  45. I am so sorry about Bensen. My Max has taken a turn for the worse this week and can barely get up, I am devastated he is not doing well. I had a call into the vet but missed her return call, not sure how as I had my phone with me the entire day. I just want to hug him and keep him forever. Sorry about your week Amy. I think there is less blog traffic everywhere when the weather gets nice.

  59. Amy, Benson's story took me back 24 years to the loss of my best friend, Ginger. I have not been able to adopt another dog since her passing. I love all my grand-dogs and look forward to visiting them as much as their families, but I don't think I could ever replace my mixed terrier friend. I share your loss deep in my heart and thank you for sharing this post.

I still miss my own sweet Ben even though it's been more than three years since he was here to brighten my life, gone but not forgotten.
I think I'll go find out a bit more about 5 on Friday and hopefully join in this week.

I have a part share in my brother's dogs, by which I mean he has them and looks after them and owns them but they are my pets to love madly when I visit him. Benson looks so beautiful; I'm sure he is running free in heaven and making God's day up there. Love x

  67. So sad for you. We've had pets and they've all gone to that great pet shop in the sky now. Strange as it may seem, I even wept buckets when the hamster had to be put to sleep! after all, it's a little rat, really, but oh, so cute! You gave Benson love, no pet could ask for more.

  71. Amy, after a year of being without my soul mate Coco, I really feel for you here. I am so sorry but I am behind with my blog reading and realised something had happened from your latest blog post. I still can't go on Coco's favourite walk and park where we used to get out and go on our adventures it is too raw. One thing that gave me comfort last year, and still does, were comments people left me where they mentioned the poem Rainbow Bridge. It tells the reader of a place where pets wait for us and when we join them they go over with us. I hold on to that thought whenever I am reminded of her and what she would do. We now have a rescue dog as you know, but the love of my Coco never fades. It's hard with the loss of Benson, especially after a long and happy life, but hold on to the thought of Rainbow Bridge, he's waiting for you and happy xx

  74. Dear Amy, so sorry to hear of your loss. I know how you are feeling. My first dog Toni died when I was 17. We'd had her since I was 2 years old, so she was 15 when we had to put her to sleep because of kidney failure. It was devastating and to this day, I still think about her -- 33 years later. Benson looks like he was a big ol' love. Bless his little furry heart. May he rest in peace. hugs and blessings, Tammy

  75. Hey Amy,
Oh my goodness, I am so, so sorry to hear about Benson. I was really touched by the things you wrote about him. I firmly believe that dogs can sense our moods and know what to do to cheer you up. As you know Honey is my constant, so I can truly empathise with how you are feeling. I cannot even bear to think about the day we say goodbye to her. I will be in bits for months. Take it easy, and allow yourself the time to grieve. Loss is a very difficult emotion to process. I always used to tell my clients that were grieving that your love never stops for the departed, but given time you can grow around the grief and take those you loved with you as you journey onwards.
    Lots of love, friend,
    Leanne xx
